A Legacy Rooted in History

Built in 1909 by inventor and entrepreneur Freelan Oscar Stanley, the Stanley Hotel was conceived as a lavish mountain escape for the elite. Its grand Georgian Revival design still radiates old-world opulence, yet time has added a certain mystique. Perched above the valley with sweeping views of the Rockies, the hotel exudes both serenity and a quiet tension—as if its walls have held onto more stories than they care to share.

Entering through the main doors, we were greeted by an atmosphere that felt strangely warm yet undeniably mysterious. The grand lobby—dim, rich, and echoing with faint chatter—was decorated with fresh flowers, as if to soften the building’s darker charm. Leather couches invited us to sit and simply observe. Guests lounged comfortably, though the air buzzed with an unspoken curiosity. Visitors may explore only certain areas on their own, but groups on guided tours slipped beyond rope lines into sections not usually open to the public, disappearing into deeper corners of the hotel where secrets linger.

Where Stephen King Found His Nightmare

The Stanley Hotel’s global fame owes much to Stephen King. In 1974, the author and his wife spent a night here, alone in the nearly abandoned hotel before it closed for winter. The silent corridors, the creaking stillness, and the feeling of being watched inspired King’s chilling masterpiece The Shining. Although Kubrick’s film wasn’t shot on-site, the hotel remains forever tied to the novel. Memorabilia from The Shining fills parts of the hotel, freely accessible to visitors. We sipped coffee while reading about King’s stay, surrounded by other guests eager to decode the history behind the horror. Downstairs, ballrooms and gift shops overflowed with themed keepsakes, each item a reminder that fiction and reality blur in these halls.

A Reputation That Refuses to Rest

Of all its qualities, the Stanley’s haunted reputation is what ignites the most fascination. Guests and staff alike have reported strange sightings and inexplicable happenings for decades. Room 217—where King slept—remains the most sought-after, rumored to host restless energy. The fourth floor is said to be even more active, with ghostly figures glimpsed wandering the shadows. Guided night tours and paranormal investigations offer brave visitors a chance to step into the unknown, listening for footsteps, faint laughter, or doors that close without a breeze.

More Than a Haunting

Yet the Stanley is far more than a home for ghosts. Its stately past comes alive through historical tours, beautifully restored architecture, and indulgent meals at the Cascades Restaurant. The MacGregor Ballroom gleams with vintage charm, hosting weddings and events that feel lifted from another era. The Stanley Concert Hall brings music and culture to this historic property, blending the vibrancy of modern life with echoes of the past.
