A Day in the Life of a Travel Blogger: Collette and Scott, Roamaroo.com

Yes, I’m a travel blogger and, yes, it’s a real job.  We’re the husband and wife travel duo, Roamaroo. While our lives on Instagram may look like our days are filled with Venetian flowers and Casablancan cotton candy, there’s a great deal behind the scenes that you don’t see. Behind the photographs, videos, and status updates, there are painstaking hours spent pitching, researching, brainstorming, writing, and editing, all while in the midst of a rigorous travel schedule.

We always get asked the question: “How do you make money?” This question is proposed by friends, family, and even strangers. Just like you, we offer our services in exchange for payment. Our services just happen to be a little different than that of your average Joe. While a doctor is paid for their medical advice and expertise, we’re paid for our creative capabilities, travel expertise, and unique storytelling techniques.

The Start of the Day

No matter where we are in the world, we always start our day with Bulletproof Coffee. It’s a mixture of coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and coffee. It gets our brains firing and ready to take on a day of blogging. We get started right away by answering emails (we get a lot overnight because of all the work we do overseas), and then we get started on our work.

The Division of Work

Scott is the photo master, graphic designer, and web designer, while Collette handles 99% of the writing, video editing, and sales. We also run a social media agency where we manage social media and content creation for other companies around the world.

If we’re going to be traveling, we try to schedule all of our social media posts using Buffer so that we can post no matter where we are in the world.

A Day in the Life

Today, we’re writing to you from Mammoth Mountain, California. We had a few sponsored Instagram photos to take, so we woke up at 7 a.m. while the lighting was just right. After that, we checked some emails to make sure we were on top of all of our projects, and Scott headed out to dominate the mountain.

This week is a short week for us since we leave for a press trip to Thailand at the end of the week, and we need to ensure that all of our projects are taken care of before our departure.

While on the mountain, Scott will take lots of photographs to use in our blog posts and on Instagram. Collette will write articles, pitch upcoming locations, and manage client relations.

While Scott is dominating the mountain on his snowboard (Mammoth just received 20’ of snow), Collette will stay home to write. Her schedule today:

  • Edit articles from Roamaroo writers
  • Polish a sponsored blog post
  • Write a freelance script for TV (I used to work in advertising, but still freelance)
  • Write an article for Livestrong.com
  • Coordinate and write a Takeover for Instagram
  • Follow up on sales pitches
  • Schedule content for the time we’re in Thailand
  • Ensure that all content is scheduled for our social media clients

Once Scott is done on the mountain, we’ll hop on a plane from Mammoth Lakes to San Francisco and then on to Los Angeles. During the flights, Collette will continue to write articles, while Scott will edit photos for the upcoming sponsored posts we have this week.

Once we arrive home in Hermosa Beach, we’ll unpack, do laundry, and then pack again for our 10-day trip to Thailand!
